About Wa Handweaving

All bags are created by the skilful Wa ladies living in the remotest areas of Yunnan Province in Southwest China, where their unique textile art has been expressing their lively culture for generations. These traditional bags, which are very popular both for men and women daily clothing, are handwoven by a very old technique involving the use of a backstrap loom. This rudimentary consists of two bars, one fixed and the other attached to the weaver with a backstrap, to operate the cotton or linen threads by moving the body accordingly. The weaver leans back to stretch the warp and with the use of a shed roll encases the weft through the string heddles, raising them by loosening the tension. Once finished, some bags are also decorated by hand with fine cross-stitch embroidery. The recurring chequered patterns, featuring playful contrasts between the black basic tone and bright colours such as red or yellow are typical of the Wa traditional clothing.
